Trump Casino to go up in Philadelphia…or Not

At a community meeting in Philadelphia, a proposal to turn a former Budd industrial site into a casino backed by billionaire Donald Trump and the former owner of the Philadelphia 76ers, Pat Croce, was met with some dissension by a moderate turnout of gambling opponents.

Trump was not in attendance; However, Croce was – and it was he who received the brunt of opposition. First addressing the meeting with a small slide presentation, the meeting essentially turned into a shouting match as Croce began playing a video and citing all the benefits of putting up a casino in Northwest Philadelphia. With over two-hundred people shouting back and forth at each other, Croce and the video were essentially drowned out.

Looking back on the incident, it was a good thing that it was also serving as a dress rehearsal for upcoming gaming hearings that will essentially determine whether or not Trump and Croce’s plan is permitted. At this particular hearing, the Chief Executive of TrumpStreet and former former President of Caesars Palace, Mark Juliano, courted the audience by clarifying that the proposed casino would be more than a place to gamble. Instead, it would offer three different movie theatres, as well as numerous restaurants.

Despite Croce’s urging that the casino would help to create numerous jobs and stimulate the economy, those who are not in favor of a casino going up kept voicing their resentment and disapproval.
